Copper Wall Sculpture ‘Meltdown’
‘Meltdown’ Copper Wall Sculpture
Inspiration & Design of ‘Meltdown’
In this work, copper tubes represent people. All nice and orderly, lined-up like soldiers on parade. Each tube has its own ‘imperfections.’ (Or are they the characteristics that make us all unique and more interesting as a result?).
One unfortunate entity has been overheated, resulting in it’s meltdown into an unrecognisable lump.
No other entity dares to move out of line to offer help. This is the ‘bystander effect’, (AKA ‘bystander apathy’, ‘pluralistic ignorance’ and ‘diffusion of responsibility’), terms used by social psychologists to describe the frequently observed human behavior where no members of a group offer help to an individual in need.
This unfortunate human behavior reminds me of the quote attributed to Edmund Burke, 18th c. Irish political philosopher;
‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing’
Making of ‘Meltdown’
Copper tubes are soldered onto a flat copper sheet. Each copper entity has varying degrees of distortion or distress; produced by selective melting of the copper with an oxy-propane flame.
The copper has been chemically patinated to provide a mottled blue and dark bronze patina, prior to mounting onto a cedar base that has been abraded to enhance the texture of the wood grain.
The wood frame and the patinated copper have been finished with a clear lacquer.
Not intended for hanging outdoors. Internal use only. Can be hung horizontal or vertical.
